Dancing for a strong brain

Hey everyone in dance land! I’ve decided to start a blog for the studio to explore some themes relating the the industry and to our own place in it. I’m by no means a professional blogger (they probably exist), so I’m sure this will grow and change over time, but for now I’ll simply share a small piece with you on the not-insignificant subject of our brains…

Dancing and brain health

Several studies undertaken in recent years have found dance to be an effective way of improving cognitive function of the brain. In fact, through these studies dance (including ballroom dance) has been found as a therapeutic treatment for people with conditions such as Parkinson's disease, and when compared to other physical hobbies such as swimming or golf, dance was the only activity shown to lower the risk of dementia.

For a more detailed dive into the cognitive benefits of dance, have a read of this Harvard University article. These have been other pieces out there over the years if you’re the type to go for a deep-dive.

From a non-scientific and anecdotal perspective, I've always joked that being a dancer makes you hard to kill. I know many industry professionals well into their 80's who are still active in the scene, and also know one professional who still teaches and judges into her 90's. I've also taught many students above the age of 70 and have noted how much sharper and vibrant they are in comparison to people I know who lead more sedentary lives. As a career dancer myself I hope this means a greater quality of life as I get older, and to everyone I work with in the industry at large.

So let's Waltz for wisdom, and Quickstep for quick-thinking!
